Propane (also called LPG-Liquefied Petroleum Gas-or LP Gas) is a widely used fuel that has many residential, commercial, agricultural, and on-road applications. It is transported and stored as a very cold liquid and can cause a “freeze burn” or frostbite if it contacts skin. The liquid propane is turned into a gas inside the tank or cylinder. In its natural form, propane is colorless and odorless. To make propane easier to detect in the event of a leak or spill, manufacturers deliberately add a chemical compound to give it a distinctive smell.

Propane is flammable when mixed with air (oxygen) and can be ignited by many sources, including open flames, smoking, electrical sparks, and static electricity.

Propane vapors are heavier than air. For this reason, leaking propane will accumulate in low-lying areas such as basements, crawl spaces, or along floors. However, air currents can sometimes carry propane vapors elsewhere within a building.

Before deliveries can be made to a customer owned tank, Shawley’s will conduct a thorough leak and safety inspection of not only the tank itself but the entire propane distribution system. These inspections ensure the safety of not only you but our service technicians as well.
  • Switching propane Suppliers. After your account has been created, we will work with you to schedule an appointment to install a Shawley’s tank at your property. After the tank has been installed and a complete leak and safety check has been performed, you can expect a swift fuel delivery to fill your tank.
  • New home construction, renovations, and improvements. No matter how large or small your project is, we have the knowledge and drive to assist you. We will schedule a free, onsite consultation to survey your project, answer your questions, and assist you with designing, building, and installing the correct products and services for your needs.
  • Adding propane appliances or equipment. If you’re thinking about adding a propane fueled appliance such as a cooking range, furnace, generator, clothes dryer, or hot water heater, or any other propane fueled appliance; Shawley’s staff can help you determine exactly which appliance is right for you. Will Call Status: Deliveries When YOU Want Them

As a Will Call customer, you can enjoy the flexibility of requesting your own propane deliveries. To request a delivery, simply call Shawley’s when your propane tank reaches 25% capacity according to the tank’s gauge to ensure your delivery arrives when you need it. Will Call Status is typically used by customers who are experienced in using propane and understand that when on Will Call Status, it is their responsibility to monitor their own tank level and usage. 

Carbon Monoxide Safety


What is Carbon Monoxide (CO)? Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and toxic gas. Smoking a cigarette; idling a gasoline engine; and burning fuel oil, wood, kerosene, natural gas, and propane all produce CO. Dangerously high levels of CO can be produced when fuels are burned incompletely. 
Where do high levels of CO come from? High levels of CO can be generated by appliances that are defective or improperly installed or maintained. Incomplete combustion of propane can produce very high levels of CO. Carbon monoxide can also enter a home if an appliance venting system or chimney becomes block.

How to Safely use a Space Heater 

  • USE THE RIGHT KIND OF HEATER. Some propane heaters are designed only for outdoor use. Others are designed only for indoor use. Check the owner’s manual or contact Shawley’s to be sure you are using the right kind of heater. Heaters can either be vent free or vented/direct vented style units with regards to exhaust ventilation. Vent Free heaters require no venting to be installed for proper operation. Vented Heaters require vent pipe to be installed to expel exhaust gases to the outside atmosphere.
  • DO NOT USE AN OUTDOOR HEATER INDOORS. High levels of carbon monoxide can be generated from heaters that are not designed for indoor use. High levels of CO can make you dizzy, give you headaches, or cause flu-like symptoms. In extreme cases, extended exposure to CO can result in brain damage or death. USE EXTREME CAUTION!
  • READ YOUR SPACE HEATER MANUAL! The appliance manufacturer’s manual that came with your space heaters instructs the owner on how to set up and operate the unit in a safe manner. Read the entire manual and carefully follow all instructions. Contact Shawley’s if you need a replacement manual or help with choosing the right heater for your needs!

Symptoms of CO Poisoning may Include:

  • Headache 
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue 

Pilot Lights


It is strongly recommended that a qualified service technician light any pilot light that has gone out!

What is a pilot light? Many propane appliances may have a pilot light which is a small, constantly burning flame inside the appliances. If your appliance has a pilot light, it is an important safety feature! The pilot light ignites the main burner as needed for normal appliance operation. Appliances without a pilot light often have electronic ignition systems.

When a pilot light goes out. A pilot light that repeatedly goes out, or is difficult to light, may be signaling that there is a problem with the appliance or with your propane system. If this occurs, do not try to fix the problem yourself.

Contact Shawley’s to evaluate the appliance and light your pilot. Accidents and serious injuries can occur when customers attempt to fix a pilot light problem on their own.

Propane Appliance Safety


 A well maintained appliance is a safe appliance. Performing periodic maintenance such as changing filters combined with annual cleanings will yield longer equipment operating life, increased performance, and maintained efficiencies.

Appliance maintenance tips:

MAINTENANCE IS IMPORTANT! All appliances using propane must be properly maintained in order to operate safely, properly, and efficiently. LEAVE IT TO THE EXPERTS! Only a gas service technician has the proper training and tools to install, service, maintain, and repair your appliances. Make sure you have Shawley’s perform all of your maintenance and repair needs.
ANNUAL INSPECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT! Most manufacturers require their products to be cleaned, serviced, and inspected annually by trained professionals in order to retain warranties. Shawley’s offers Annual Service Agreements to provide this annual service to you, contact us to learn more! BE SURE YOUR APPLIANCES CAN “BREATHE” PROPERLY. Regularly check the vents of your appliances to be sure that flue/exhaust gases can flow easily to the outdoors. Insects, birds, and small animals are known to sometimes build nests in vent pipes. Other obstructions such as snow or ice may also prohibit the properly ventilation of your appliance. Also, the area around your appliance should be kept clean and clear of obstruction to allow the proper air flow to your burner assembly. NEVER store combustible materials near appliances. WATCH FOR YELLOW FLAMES OR SOOT BUILD-UP! When appliances are operating properly, propane burns with a bright blue flame. If you notice yellow flames or significant amounts of soot on any equipment, the appliance is not properly burning the propane supply. This incomplete combustion of propane can create carbon monoxide which is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. CONTACT SHAWLEY’S IMMEDIATELY IF ANY OF THE ABOVE CONDITIONS OCCUR.

What Happens When 
You Run Out of Gas?


Running out of gas is not only an inconvenience but can cause serious safety hazards where fire or explosion can occur. The best way to prevent these hazards is to NOT RUN OUT OF GAS. 

Hazards of Running Out of Gas:

  • If an appliance valve or a gas line is left open when a run out occurs, a leak could develop when the system is recharged with propane.Air and moisture can seep into an empty storage tank which can cause rust build-up inside the container. Rust can not only deteriorate the rigidity of the container itself but also reduce the concentration of the odor of propane, making it harder to smell/detect.
  • When a run out occurs, any pilot lights on your appliances will go out and will need to be re-light after your tank is filled and before you can operate the appliance again. Unlit pilot lights can leak propane vapor into the area surrounding the appliance with dangerous consequences!
  • CONTACT SHAWLEY’S IMMEDIATELY IF YOU RUN OUT OF PROPANE!
  • A Leak and Safety Check must be completed on your entire propane system after a run out occurs and before service can be re-established.

How to Avoid Running Out of Propane:

  • Periodically check your tank’s fuel gauge. When your gauge reads 20% or below contact Shawley’s to request a delivery before running out of propane.
SET UP REGULAR DELIVERY. Establish an automatic delivery schedule with Shawley’s. With automatic delivery you never have to worry about checking your fuel gauge or running out of propane ever again! When on Shawley’s automatic delivery scheduling, Shawley’s will monitor your tank’s fuel level through regular deliveries and stops. Not only will you never run out of gas again but you have the peace of mind knowing that your propane system is being inspected regularly by a trained professional!

How to Read Your Tank Gauge


The gauge that is mounted on your propane tank measures the volume of fuel remaining as a percentage of the total capacity of the tank. The most common error made by consumers is to believe the gauge reads in gallons of fuel remaining, IT DOES NOT. 

To establish how much fuel is left in your tank, simply multiply the water capacity of your propane tank by the percentage shown on the gauge. The gauge pictured below is for generalization only, the gauge on your tank may appear different but will read/operate in the same fashion.

The gauge on the left is reading roughly 55% as indicated by the needle. This means that the propane tank has approximately 55% of the total water capacity left. For example, if this gauge was attached to a 125 gallon propane tank, the tank will have approximately 68.75 gallons of propane remaining (125 x .55). If the needle was pointing at 80%, the tank will have 100 gallons remaining (125 x .80).

Things to remember about your propane gauge:

  • It is important to check your propane gauge often, typically once every two weeks or at least once every month. Over time the float attached to the gauge may malfunction producing a non-functioning gauge that may “stick” at a certain percentage.
  • The gauge gives an approximation of fuel remaining in your tank. The actual level of propane in your tank may vary depending upon many factors including the ambient outdoor temperature. As temperatures increase, the vapor pressure inside the tank will increase and vice versa.
  • WHEN THE GAUGE READS 20% OR BELOW, CALL SHAWLEY’S IMMEDIATELY TO RECEIVE A PROPANE DELIVERY BEFORE YOUR TANK RUNS OUT!!

Space Heater Safety


Space heaters provide the comfort and flexibility that homeowners desire but can pose many hazards if not properly sized, installed, operated, and/or maintained.

How to Safely use a Space Heater 

  • USE THE RIGHT KIND OF HEATER. Some propane heaters are designed only for outdoor use. Others are designed only for indoor use. Check the owner’s manual or contact Shawley’s to be sure you are using the right kind of heater. What To Do If You Smell Gas


The smell of propane should always be treated with the utmost priority and requires immediate action. It is important to remember that not all people can easily recognize the smell of propane due to age, medical conditions, side effects of medication, and so forth. The strength of the odorant used to produce propane’s distinctive smell may also fade over time (odorant fade) due to a number of factors. Because of this, IT IS IMPORTANT TO REPORT ALL SUSPECTED LEAKS OR THE SMELL OF PROPANE TO SHAWLEY’S!

If you smell gas, follow the below steps to ensure your safety!

  • NO FLAMES OR SPARKS! Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. DO NOT operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
  • LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY! Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking. 
  • SHUT OFF THE GAS SUPPLY. Turn off the main gas supply (service) valve on your propane tank(s) if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
  • REPORT THE LEAK. From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call Shawley’s at (301)-797-4887 IMMEDIATELY.
  • DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until a service technician from Shawley’s or your local fire official determines that it is safe to do so.
  • GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED/SERVICED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, a qualified gas service technician from Shawley’s must conduct a Leak/Safety Inspection and Gas Check procedure to your entire system to ensure it is safe to operate again.
 

Tank Familiarization


Propane tanks are available in a wide array of configurations and capacities. For example, when using a 100-Gallon propane tank, the customer can choose between vertical or horizontal above ground configurations or a buried underground configuration. The tank capacity that is right for your application depends primarily on your demand or usage for propane but also the expected duration between deliveries or fill ups.

Understanding how to identify the individual parts of your propane tank and knowing their specific function greatly increases your ability to respond to an emergency situation. Please review the information below to familiarize yourself with your tank!
  • Fill Valve – This valve is where the liquid propane is pumped into the storage tank from the Bobtail delivery truck.
  • Manufacturers Nameplate – Also referred to as the “data plate,” this contains essential tank information from the manufacturer such as tank size, serial number, manufacture data and so forth. If the data plate is missing from the tank, it must be removed from service immediately.
  • Face Gauge – Indicates the amount of propane in the tank. Gauges read in percentages (%). 80% is industry standard for a “Full” tank. A gauge that reads 40% is to be considered half full. If your gauge reads 20% or below, call us immediately!
  • Relief Valve – The relief valve allows excess propane to vent/escape from the tank in the event the tank has been overfilled or has exceeded normal internal pressure. The relief valve will open automatically when the pressure is too high and will close automatically once the pressure has stabilized. /safety-resources/tank-familiarization. 
  • Service Valve – The service valve allows the tank to be “turned” off and on. When the valve is fully turned counter-clockwise, the valve and tank is OPEN. When the valve is fully turned clockwise, the valve and tank is CLOSED or OFF. If a problem with your tank is ever suspected, IMMEDIATELY CLOSE THE SERVICE VALVE AND CONTACT SHAWLEY’S!! 
  • Liquid Withdrawal Valve – This valve allows liquid propane to be drawn/pumped from the Tank. Some propane powered applications require the supply of liquid propane for use. The valve also allows service technicians to “empty” the tank of liquid propane prior to removal or repair. This valve requires a secondary fitting in order to function. NEVER ATTEMPT TO DRAW LIQUID FROM YOUR TANK ! WITHDRAWL MUST BE COMPLETED BY PROFESSIONAL GAS SERVICE TECHNICIAN.

Review account history/activity, receive invoices in real time, and even request fuel deliveries and service through our website.
