Furnaces

Propane furnaces keep your home or business warm by using a forced-air blower to circulate hot air through ductwork and into the areas where you need it the most. Propane furnaces offer very efficient heating regardless of your individual situation by providing more heat for less money when compared to other heating sources such as electricity or fuel oil.

Propane vs. Electric

  • Operating Costs. One gallon of propane burns at 91,500Btu an hour where as 1kW of electricity produces just 3,412Btu an hour. This means that there are roughly 27kW of electricity needed to reach the same level of heat as one gallon of propane. Propane furnaces are saving customers over 70 cents per equivalent hour over electric across the United States every hour.
  • Reliability. Propane furnaces on average last 15 to 20 years which is five to 10 years longer than a standard electric heat pump. Power outages due to heavy snowfall or ice storms in the winter time make electric furnaces inoperable, leaving your family or business in the cold. Propane furnaces however, will continue to run even when the lights go out providing the warmth and comfort you need and deserve.
  • Performance and Efficiency. Propane furnaces on average heat air up to 25 degrees warmer than comparable electric furnaces. Electric Heat Pumps produce air that is below body temperature, resulting in air coming out of your vents that feels cold. Propane furnaces, which are available with efficiency ratings as high as 98%, produce nearly 70% less CO2 than electric units.

Propane vs. Fuel Oil

  • Operating Costs. The National Residential Average Cost of one gallon of fuel oil is just over $4.00 compared with Propane’s $2.48 price. While it is true that fuel oil burns hotter and produces more heat per gallon than propane, nationally customers are spending over $1.50 more per gallon than propane. The average oil tank at a residence holds 250-275 gallons of oil meaning the cost to fill an oil tank nationally is $1,000 to $1,100. On average, a propane furnace requires the installation of one or two 100 gallon propane tanks. The cost to fill up these propane tanks on average is $248-$496 more than half as expensive as oil.
  • Efficiency. The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency of a furnace or boiler is a measure of combustion efficiency, how much of the input energy is converted to useable heat. The average oil boiler has an AFUE of between 80-85% meaning that for every 100Btus of energy, the unit produces 80-85Btus of useable heat and the other 15-20Btus are lost through the exhaust of the unit. Propane furnaces on average have AFUE ratings of 90-95%. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient the unit meaning more useable heat and less waste, saving you money.

Boilers

Boilers, like furnaces are a critical part of your home or business’s HVAC system. Boiler heating systems keep you warm by heating up water and circulating it through radiators placed through the building. The heat from the water (or steam) radiates into the living or working space, thus keeping you warm. The water is then circulated back to the boiler and reheated, starting the process over again.

Boilers provide an excellent source of heat, much like traditional furnaces. Boilers however, do not require the installation of ductwork throughout the building; they rely on hard pipe running to radiators in each room. This makes boilers an ideal choice for apartment complexes, commercial applications, and other buildings with a large number of rooms that need to be heated.

Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps deliver four-season comfort in one unit. During the summer time, they cool your home or business like an air conditioner by drawing the heat from inside your home to cool it. In the winter, it draws heat from the outside air into your home to warm it. Heat Pumps work in tandem with either an Evaporator Coil or Air Handler to circulate the heated or cooled air throughout your home or business.

Heat Pumps provide many benefits to customers because they are both dual purpose and highly efficient. Not only can you heat and cool your home with one unit, you can increase your comfort for less expense. Heat Pumps supplement your heating expense during the winter time by reducing the amount of time your heating unit such as a furnace operates meaning you are burning less Propane or Natural Gas to maintain the same level of heat and comfort inside your home or business.

Water Heaters

Would you like an endless supply of hot water? Do you want to reduce your impact on the environment? Do you want to save money? If you answered YES to any of these questions, consider installing a tank-less propane water heater. More and more homeowners are warming up to the benefits of going tank-less.

Unlike conventional tanked or storage water heaters, tank-less systems only heat water when it’s needed. When a water tap is opened, the tank-less model senses the demand for hot water and starts the heating process. Water flows through a heat ex-changer and is heated to the temperature set by the user. When the water tap is closed, the heater automatically shuts off until how water is demanded again. This process drastically reduces the amount of fuel needed to supply hot water by eliminating the need for conventional water heaters to maintain the preset temperature for the stored water.

Benefits of a Propane
Tankless Water Heater:

  • Operating Costs. Tankless water heaters reduce standby energy loss by up to 20 percent compared to conventional storage water heaters and cost approximately 60 percent less to operate.
  • Performance and Reliability. Most tankless water heaters can provide over eight gallons of hot water per minute. Because tankless models are less subject to corrosion, the expected life span of a tankless water heater is 20 years, twice as long as most traditional storage water heaters.
  • Efficiency. Tankless water heaters do not use storage tanks to store and constantly heat water. Water is only heated when hot water is demanded, thus reducing wasted energy. Tankless propane water heaters are so efficient that they are Energy Star Qualified, electric tankless water heaters are not. Most tankless propane water heaters are between 95-98% efficient, saving you money.
  • Environmentally Friendly. Tankless propane water heaters reduce carbon emissions by 63 percent compared to electric tankless water heaters and help prevent the emission of over 35,000lbs of greenhouse gases over 10 years when compared to traditional electric water heaters. Tankless propane water heaters are so environmentally friendly and efficient that many installations quality the home or business owner for Federal, State, and/or Local Tax Credits

Indoor Air Quality

Due to strict building codes and regulations, modern homes are being built with high quality air and moisture barrier materials or insulation. While these products help reduce energy costs by decreasing the amount of heat or cooling loss, they come with an often unnoticed consequence. These materials highly restrict the movement of air within your home, creating an environment where fresh air is limited, which decreases the total quality of the air you breathe while in your home. Particles such as pollen, dander, allergens, and dust can build up within your home and cause significant impacts on your air quality. The EPA suggests that the air you breathe inside of your home can actually be two to five times more polluted than outside air!

Indoor air quality products such as filtration systems, humidifiers, and zone controls can help to drastically reduce the amount of allergens and harmful particles in your home’s air.

Benefits of Indoor Air Quality Products:

  • Comfort. Humidifiers eliminate nuisance problems such as itchy or dry skin by putting needed moisture back into the air. Dehumidifiers decrease the moisture level in you air and reduce the feelings of you home’s air being hot and sticky or cold and clammy. Reducing moisture levels in the air also reduce the risk of mold or mildew buildup within your home.
  • Health. Airborne contaminants such as pollen, pet dander, mold, bacteria, and viruses can lead to everything from minor sinus irritations to sever health complications. Air Cleaners and Filtration Systems remove most of these potentially harmful contaminants from the air in every room of your home allowing you to breathe a little easier.
  • Material Protection. Moisture is one of the leading causes of material degradation. Too much moisture in the air will cause wood to rot, wallpaper and paint to peel, and mold or mildew to grow. Indoor air quality products eliminate this risk by maintaining the right balance of moisture, movement, and fresh air within your home or business.

Ductwork Cleaning & Repair

Duct Cleaning

Over years of continuous use pollutants, allergens, and particles such as pollen, dust mites, pet hair, and dirt collect and stick to the inside walls of the ductwork system installed in your home or business. Depending on the type of pollutants/particles and the humidity of your home, your dirty ductwork can provide the perfect breeding ground for hazardous pollutants such as bacteria and molds which get distributed through your home or business and ingested with every breath you take on a daily basis.

With duct cleaning services from Shawley’s not only will you ensure that your ductwork is clear of these pollutants and debris but that the air you breathe is fresh and healthy. The service includes cleaning of your supply, return, and branch ducts, the removal and cleaning of your grills/registers, and the spraying of a sanitizing mist inside your ductwork that ensures your system is pollutant free.

Duct Repair

Your ductwork system is critical in the efficient operation of your heating and cooling system. Undersized, damaged, or leaking ductwork could be costing you money by increasing your heating/cooling expenses all year long. Undersized ductwork restricts the free flow of air throughout your home seriously impacting the ability of your equipment to keep you comfortable year round.

Does your ductwork “whistle” or make noises when your air or heat is turned on? Does too much or too little air blow through your registers or vents? Is your ductwork damaged, not properly sealed, or leaking air? If you answered yes to any of these questions then your ductwork system needs immediate attention. Shawley’s skilled service technicians are available to correct any of these problems which will not only improve your comfort, system operating efficiency, but also keep more money in your pocket.
